Snap chilling is becoming more and more popular. With the future cooling requirements closing in on us (2016) a number of farmers are seeing the attraction of snap chilling milk. There are several benefits to having cold milk before it even enters the vat, including a huge reduction in bacteria growth, milk is at temperature ready for collection at any time with minimal work being done in the vat.

The Varicool system ('chiller in a box' as some farmers like to call it) has been designed to snap chill milk down to 6 degs. 

This is a different process to standard DX type chilling. The plate cooler is still used to pre chill your milk using bore water typically down to around 15-18 degs (depending on area/situation) The milk then goes through a second plate cooler chilling process before heading to the vat. This second cooler has a 1 deg water/glycol mix pumped through it. (food grade glycol acts as an anti freeze) Therefore the milk is leaving this cooler and heading to the vat at 6 degs. 

The Varicool is also pumping the same water/glycol mix through the refrigerated pads on your milk vat. Because milk is entering the vat so cold there is very little cooling to do in the vat.

As a byproduct of chilling your milk, heat removed from the plate cooling process and vat chilling is recovered by this machine and returned to your hot water cylinders as 70 deg water free of charge.

The Varicool units are connected via satellite dish so the farmer and engineers can access the machine from anywhere they have internet access. The system can also be connected to a monitoring service, meaning if you have a issue it is picked up straight away. Temperatures for both vats and plate cooler, hot water etc are graphed for 90 days.
